Part4 Learning and Revise

  1. First adjustment

Summarize different types of stereotypes. Reason: A 1500-word essay cannot support overly detailed classifications.

Inspiration porn, villain, tragic

Then I learned about models of disabilities, and decide to use two general models to help me explain some changes in disabled characters in films.

Medical model

The Medical model defines disability as something that people with disabilities need to overcome or be cured of

Social model

The social model contends that the barriers encountered by people with disabilities stem from society’s lack of inclusivity toward individuals with disabilities. (UPIAS, 1975)

I am unable to find a sufficient number of direct examples demonstrating how stereotypical portrayals influence audience perceptions. Instead, I will support my argument by drawing on the theory that film serves as an excellent medium for educating and shaping concepts/ideas.

I keep doing my research by asking myself questions to be critical

Reasons for Change (Answering “Why the change?”):

  • World Wars
  • Disability Rights Movement
  • Social Model (of disability)

Why these three main types of stereotypes emerged: (This point seems to be a placeholder or a question for you to answer within the text, not something to be directly translated as a heading.)

Why stereotypes still persist today:

This situation is partly because of history and partly because filmmakers are more concerned with appealing to the general public than accurately portraying people with disabilities (Safran, 2000).

Theoretical support for influencing audience perceptions: (This is where you’ll bring in the theory about film as an educational medium, as previously discussed.)

Relevant reform policies (their practices and philosophies, similarities and differences):

Control word count and ensure relevance.

First Revision:

Decided against individually describing stereotype types; instead, will illustrate with examples integrated into historical events.

Second Revision:

Then, transition to the next chapter, which will cover current policies.

Merged the second chapter (How stereotypes affect society) into the historical section.

The structure of the first chapter will now be: Historical Event → Corresponding Cases/Examples → Impact on Society.
